Dis-Able Sailing
Dis-Able Sailing Incorporated facilitates, promotes and fosters sailing for people with a disability and people at risk. We are a charity organisation founded in 2008 which uses integrated sailing as a medium to deliver programs to disabled and disadvantaged adults, children and their Carers. Dis-Able Sailing (DSI) is an organisation committed to changing society’s perception of people with disabilities. DSI’s members believe that disabled people are capable of participating in active and responsible roles in our society and should not be treated differently because of their disabilities. Leisure sailing, racing, inshore and coastal training programs are just some of the ways DSI works to achieve this. As part of our programs we offer people of all ages, from special schools and community organisations in South Australia, the opportunity to sail with DSI.
Sailors will be instructed in most aspects of yacht handling and trained in the following areas: general seamanship, points od sail, trimmiong and setting sails, spinnaker handling, outboard motor instruction and helming. Dis-Able Sailing also presents individuals with an opportunity to enhance social activity and interaction whilst enjoying the elements and challenges of the open seas. The 7.4 metre day sailing yacht Freedom, has been specifically designed to accommodatepersons with a mild disability, with a spacious cockpit accommodating eight sailors and all the ropes run into the cockpit reducing the need to go to the front of the boat.
Dis-Able Sailing wishes to extend an opportunity for weekday sailing by arrangement, in the aim to accommodate those who are unable to participate on the weekend, on the 7.4m keel boat Freedom which is moored at the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron at Outer Harbour.
