- The Tasar has a lightweight hull using modern fibreglass foam-sandwich construction and sophisticated sail tuning controls.
- It was deisgned by well-known Australian yachtsman Frank Bethwaite in 1976, motivated by the need for a yacht which was within the physical capabilities of both men and women to sail, but responsive enough to be enjoyable and challenging for experienced sailors.
- It was of particular interest to the designers to create a boat suitable for husband and wife teams to sail together competitively.

- The Australian Navy has recognised the advantages of the Tasar and selected it ahead of all other classes in Australia for its Sail Training fleet.
- Second hand boats are available from $2,000 or new boats can be purchased in kits from $7,000 up to $10,000 for a boat fitted ready to sail.
