Nominee: Tom Crabb
Nominated by: Cruising Yacht Club of SA
6th ~ Melbourne to Osaka Double Handed Yacht Race, Outright
2nd ~ Melbourne to Osaka Double Handed Yacht Race, Racer Class Division C
2006/07 Achievements:
« In 2007, Tom sailed his yacht “Southern Light” in the 6th Melbourne to Osaka Double Handed Yacht Race. This race, held every 4 years, is the longest non-stop double handed race in the world, spanning approx 5,500 miles from Melbourne to Osaka, Japan.
« Tom purchased “Southern Light”, an Adams 11.9 in 2004 and after major modifications, designed and constructed by Tom, Southern Light was re-launched in February 2007 a few weeks before the race start.
« Tom sailed to Melbourne with modifications still to be done and with last minute assistance from family and friends, Tom and crewmate Trent Justice crossed the start line in Port Phillip Bay in the fleet of 15 boats.
« Southern Light was one of the smallest and by far the narrowest boat in the fleet; she also lacked some of the luxuries of the well financed campaigns. After 3 days Southern Light was placed 5th, until rudder problems forced Tom and Trent into Bermagui for repairs. Four days later they rejoined the race, but by then they were 400 miles behind their closest competitor and 1100 miles behind the leader.
« Within a week Southern Light was consistently sailing the greatest number of miles between radio schedules. Though sheer determination, Tom sailed through the fleet to finish 6th over the line and 2nd in Racer Class C Division.
« Southern Light finished less than 24 hours behind the class winner and well ahead of several much larger boats. Tom and Trent completed the 5,500 mile race in just over 37 days.
Other achievements:
« Tom sailed in Holdfast Trainers, Sabres and Sharpies (1991 – 1998). « He sailed aboard Secret Mens Business for 4 seasons, including 2 Sydney Hobart races, and has competed several times in the Sydney to Southport Race and at Hamilton Island Race Week.« During these regattas his results included a 1st placing in the Sydney to Southport crewing with Geoff Boettcher in a Sydney 38.« Tom’s experience also includes crewing aboard Rager in the 1999 Sydney Hobart Race.
« Tom has assisted at the CYCSA on committee boats and in regatta organisation including the 2006 Dragon National Championship.
